Hi, I’m Emma Brooks, small business website designer and your guide through the online wilderness.
A freelance copywriter since 2011, I’ve worked on a lot of websites over the years. The biggest thing I’ve learned along the way?
It takes more than glossy design to turn browsers into clients.
Successful websites are a thoughtful blend of useful, engaging content and visually-appealing, easy to navigate design. They talk about topics your clients care about, introduce elements of your own story, and rank highly in Google. And here’s the part no one likes to hear: they require regular, recurring work.
A website is not a one-time investment. You cannot throw up a few pages and expect your work to be done. Regular security updates, fresh new injections of content, and ongoing marketing are all vital if you want to consistently attract new readers and better results.
The problem for most business owners is getting all these parts working together. It takes time and effort to set up a fantastic web presence and keep it firing on all cylinders.
That’s where I come in. Whether you’re launching something new or refining an existing site, I’ll take you through the whole process from start to launch, with all the pieces tying together and working towards your business goals.
I built my first WordPress website in 2011. It was bad. The second version wasn’t much better. Or the seventh!
Still, all that fumbling and fiddling wasn’t wasted. As time went on, those random scrawls of HTML and CSS started to make more sense, and I realised I’d inadvertently acquired the ability to write a whole new language.
Coding satisfies my left brain. I love writing: the feel and flow of words across a page, the thrill of finding the perfect turn of phrase to convey a thought or spark a reaction. But I also love the deep satisfaction that comes from nutting out a solution to a technical problem and bringing an idea to life online.
I live in Dunedin on the South Island of New Zealand. It’s a long way from the small English town where I grew up, but with bush, beach and ocean on my doorstep I feel like I’ve hit the jackpot every time I step outdoors. And outdoors is where you’ll find me when I’m not writing or coding: sailing in the harbour, heading out on a long walk, or attempting to catch a wave at St Clair. I’m a fan of public libraries, backcountry camping and Whittaker’s 72% dark chocolate.
“Working with Emma means I never have to worry about a single aspect of my website or online presence. She keeps everything ticking along smoothly; editing content, coming up with new ideas, managing SEO and keeping the site secure – all the things I don’t have time to learn about or maintain. Our website is our most valuable marketing and sales tool, so it’s a massive weight off my mind to know that it’s always up-to-date and working perfectly.”SHARON SOUTHERN, WAOKU LODGE
"At our first meeting Emma quickly grasped the concept we were trying to portray, offering ideas and structure to our vision. Emma was a delight to work with; she had a wealth of experience and this was reflected in the way in which she collated information from our archives. Her calm approach and attention to detail guided us through the project with ease."LESLEY BARKER, GREENLEA PREMIER MEATS LTD
"Emma is easy to deal with, and her web design has changed my business markedly with turnover up by 300%. Selling paulownia timber has never been easier, and my customers have commented on the great site, and ease of use. If I need to change anything her service is prompt. This was the single best decision that I have made in my business."GRAHAM SMITH, PAULOWNIA NZ
